Soil is a limited, fragile resource and, above all, non-renewable on a human timescale. Any agricultural activity that aims to be truly sustainable must have a clear understanding of the quality of the soils on which it operates. In recent years, regulatory and scientific attention to soil safety has significantly increased: from the update of DM 13/09/1999 to DM 01/03/2019, and the ARPA guidelines on background values, the message is clear: agricultural operators can no longer rely on assumptions, measurement is required.
Within this framework, our monitoring campaigns play an important role: these investigations are rigorous and designed to evaluate potential cumulative impacts arising from the use of compost and soil amendments, and above all to verify the suitability of soils for cultivation.
Investigations are conducted over areas of tens of hectares, divided into Homogeneous Sampling Zones (ZOC). For each ZOC, an average of 7 elementary samples per hectare is collected, as indicated in DM 01/03/2019 – No. 46.
The process includes:
● sampling using an auger, spade, or shovel
● homogenization, sieving, and quartering directly in the field
● division into two aliquots for laboratory reproducibility analyses
● prevention of contamination through light-shielded glass containers
The protocol follows the procedures defined in DM 13/09/1999 for soil analyses.
Analyses include:
● Metals and metalloids
● Heavy hydrocarbons and PAHs
● PCBs (DL and NDL)
● Dioxins and furans
● Phthalates
● PFAS
● Agronomic properties
Results are compared with:
● Contamination Threshold Concentrations (CSC) defined in DM 01/03/2019, Annex 2, Article 3
● Background values specific to the depositional unit, defined by ARPA.
Agriculture rests on three fundamental pillars: soil, water, and air. Without objective measurements, any potential risk remains invisible, and therefore unmanageable.
K-INN Tech monitoring allows stakeholders to:
● verify full compliance with DM 01/03/2019 limits
● prevent disputes, regulatory prescriptions, or production restrictions
● provide third-party documentation of soil quality.
Monitoring also addresses an increasingly central question: do organic amendments, such as compost, lead to the accumulation of contaminants?
These types of investigations should become an integral part of advanced agronomic management, as already occurs in several EU countries. The reasons are straightforward:
· European policies (Green Deal, Soil Strategy 2030, SDG 15) require documented evidence of soil protection
· Financial and insurance markets are beginning to request certified sustainability data
· Environmental traceability is becoming a competitive requirement for high-quality agri-food supply chains.
We are already integrating monitoring procedures across several projects, with the goal of building databases capable of identifying trends, anomalies, and changes related to the use of compost, fertilizers, and crop rotations.
Periodic monitoring of the chemical, physical, and agronomic properties of soils is not merely a bureaucratic obligation. It is a fundamental element for ensuring sustainability, regulatory compliance, and the long-term value of agricultural land.
